Rose for a Blue Jay

I stood undecided where the river divided
Not knowing which way to choose.
I dug with my fingers deep in the danger
Until I found something to lose.

 Promise me Ann Marie,
Falling like mercury,
Love that's in vain but in time,
A snapshot on Sunday,
A rose for a blue jay,
A heart no border will ever confine.

Down in the parlor the groom and the father
Shake hands on what should be mine,
While up in her chamber Anne Marie wanders
Spaces I'm leaving behind.

 Promise me Ann Marie,
Falling like mercury,
Love that's in vain but in time,
A snapshot on Sunday,
A rose for a blue jay,
A heart no border will ever confine.

From the red desert rocks to the fishermen's docks
To the homes we don't think about much anymore,
I'll be thinking of you, you'll think of me too,
As somebody new knocks on the door.

Walking at midnight, I'll aim my flashlight
Up at the sky it will shine,
And if you do the same thing, imagine you might see
Our light beams cross like a sign.

 Promise me Ann Marie,
Falling like mercury,
Love that's in vain but in time,
A snapshot on Sunday,
A rose for a blue jay,
A heart no border will ever confine.
A heart no border will ever confine.
